2025 was a solid year for travel. While there was a slight downturn from the record-breaking year of 2024 (affected by global uncertainties, geo political instability and the economic state of households), we saw some fundamental shifts in the way businesses leveraged technology and digital transformation. AI arrived with a seismic bang, it stopped being a future state and became reality.

Looking back at our predictions from years past, we called several trends that have now become standard practice: automation, AI, and machine learning have moved from experimental to essential; and the buy versus build debate has clearly shifted toward integration and collaboration between tech providers. We also predicted the surge in online cruise bookability and the numbers proved us right, with the industry racing to meet CLIA’s target of 4 million new-to-cruise customers.

With a deep dive into the wider Travel industry and our expertise as travel technology providers, here’s what we think will define 2026 for travel businesses.

AIVA AI cruise search feature shows questions "can you tell me which cruise lines have a go kart track onboard" and answer " The cruise line known for having go-kart tracks onboard is Norwegian Cruise Line, specifically on their Bliss, Joy, and Encore ships. "

1. AI Moves From Assistant to Orchestrator

AI has been hovering in the background for years, but 2026 is when it takes centre stage as a tool. We’re not just talking about chatbots that answer basic questions. AI is becoming what the industry calls “agentic” multiple systems working together to handle complex travel needs from start to finish.

According to Amadeus research, 46% of travellers are willing to trust AI systems for travel bookings. That number is only going up with a 64% year-on year increase in the percentage of global travelers leaning upon generative AI-powered tools.

Top 5 Travel Technologoy Trends for 2026 | traveltek

However, cruise bookings tell a different story. As new-to-cruise passengers increase and demographic shifts drive demand for expedition and luxury cruises, more travellers are seeking travel agents for expertise. Trust and authentic knowledge remain key.

This is where AI becomes your competitive advantage. Tools like Quote Builder and AIVA (Traveltek’s AI search feature) help agents compare hundreds of options using natural language, turning 20-minute searches into 30-second conversations. AI frees your team from repetitive tasks so they can focus on the human part of the job—the exceptional service customers can’t get from ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude.

The biggest shift comes from systemic AI integration. As our partners at Traverse Automation put it so well “Think of it like this… You as a human, doing what you’re best at, making decisions, being creative, managing people. Your AI teammate, handling the mundane, repetitive stuff like collecting information, making reports, organising tasks, alerting you when something’s wrong.”

2. Unified Platforms Replace Fragmented Systems

Here’s what agents tell us: they’re tired of logging into five different systems to build one holiday. 2026 is the year smoother integrations and less double-typing become reality.

By 2026, 65% of bookings are projected to happen online, and travellers expect seamless experiences. If your booking system feels clunky, they’ll go elsewhere. Dynamic packaging (combining flights, hotels, cruises, and activities in real time from a single platform) is now the baseline expectation.

For your business, this means evaluating whether your tech stack helps or hinders your team. Are your agents switching between systems? Re-entering the same information multiple times? Every extra click is time they’re not spending with customers.

The answer isn’t ripping everything out and starting fresh. It’s choosing technology partners who understand that integrations need to feel seamless. When your team builds a cruise package with pre- and post-cruise hotels and flights, it should flow naturally with pricing that updates in real time.

Top 5 Travel Technologoy Trends for 2026 | traveltek

The cruise industry particularly benefits here. A Mediterranean cruise isn’t just a ship; it’s flights, overnight stays, transfers, maybe a pre-cruise hotel in Barcelona and post-cruise days in Rome. The businesses that can build these packages efficiently will close more bookings.

3. Travellers Are On the Hunt for Experiences and Your Systems Need to Support It

Here’s what the data shows: 84% of travellers say they’ll travel as much or more in 2026 compared to 2025, but they’re being more intentional about their choices. They’re not just booking a destination holiday, they want experiences built around their passions.

Expedia’s research found travellers are building trips around pop culture moments and experiences. Among Gen Z and Millennials, 81% plan getaways based on what they’ve seen on screen, whilst 57% would attend a regional sporting event whilst travelling. Think music festivals, theatre performances, sporting events, cultural celebrations; trips built around experiences, not just destinations.

Expedia’s research found that travellers are building trips around personal passions, from on-screen escapes (Among Gen Z and Millennial travellers, 81% now plan their getaways based on what they’ve seen on screen) to unique sporting experiences (57% would attend a regional sporting event whilst travelling).

The cruise industry is embracing this shift brilliantly. Virgin Voyages’ True Crime Voyage, for example, hosts live podcast recordings and workshops at sea, turning a sailing into an immersive experience for true crime enthusiasts. These aren’t just themed cruises, they’re complete experiences designed around specific interests.

For your business, this means your agents need to understand not just “they want a cruise” but “they’re planning their Mediterranean sailing around the Monaco Grand Prix” or “they want that Virgin Voyages True Crime experience with the podcast recordings.”

Your technology needs to support this level of experience-based personalisation. Good systems remember that a customer books around sports events or always adds theatre packages.

Through our partnership with digitaltravel.io we see just how impactful personalisations on websites and apps can be on sales. The systems that surface relevant experiences automatically will drive repeat bookings and customer loyalty.

4. Real-Time Everything Becomes Non-Negotiable

Nobody wants to wait. According to IATA data, 71% of travellers prefer booking online or through mobile apps, and 53% book directly through airline or cruise line websites. They expect instant responses.

For cruise businesses, where cabin availability changes constantly, and pricing is complex, real-time systems aren’t a luxury; they’re essential. Your agents need to know right now whether that mid-ship balcony cabin is available, not get an answer back in an hour when the customer has already booked elsewhere.

This extends beyond the booking moment. Your customers expect real-time updates about itinerary changes, port information, and modifications.

From a business perspective, your technology infrastructure needs to be built for speed. Ask yourself: how long does it take your team to confirm availability and pricing? If the answer is measured in hours rather than seconds, you’ve got a problem that needs solving before your competitors solve it first.

This might mean tough conversations about legacy systems that can’t keep pace, but the cost of not upgrading is lost bookings.

5. Mobile-First Is Now Mobile-Everything

But here’s where apps become game-changers: they create loyalty in ways websites can’t. Mobile app notifications have significantly higher click-through rates than emails; travellers are far more likely to engage with a push notification about a last-minute cabin deal or itinerary change than they are to open yet another email. Apps keep your business front and centre on customers’ devices, making rebooking and repeat purchases effortless.

Think about how your team actually works. They’re on the phone with a customer and need to do a quick lookup. They’re at a trade show showing options on their tablet. They’re working from home and switching between devices. Every feature needs to work everywhere.

This doesn’t mean desktop disappears. Complex bookings still benefit from larger screens. But mobile can’t be an afterthought. If your agents can’t quickly check availability, pull up booking history, or process a modification from their phone, they’re working with one hand tied behind their back.

Cruise sales particularly benefit from mobile-optimised systems and apps. Sales often happen over multiple conversations, with information shared via WhatsApp or email between discussions. Your team needs tools that fit this workflow, whilst customers need apps that make managing their bookings and receiving updates seamless.

What This Means for Your Business

These trends point in one direction: technology should make selling travel easier, not harder. The best tools in 2026 will be the ones your team doesn’t have to think about. They just work, surfacing the right information at exactly the right time.

For travel businesses evaluating their technology in 2026, the questions to ask are straightforward:

  • Does your current system free your team to focus on customers, or bog them down in admin?
  • Can your agents build complex packages without switching between multiple platforms?
  • Does your technology remember customer preferences and relevant experiences?
  • Can your systems deliver real-time availability and pricing?
  • Does everything your team needs work just as well on mobile as desktop?

At Traveltek, we’ve spent more than 25 years building systems that travel businesses actually want to use. As we head into 2026, we’re focused on making sure our platforms evolve with these trends whilst staying grounded in what really matters: helping your business sell more travel with less hassle.

The travel landscape is changing fast. The businesses that thrive will be the ones whose technology keeps up.

Expedia is one of the world’s largest Online Travel Agencies. On its platform, travelers can choose from millions of properties, billions of airline seats, and thousands of car rentals, cruises, and excursions.

Wouldn’t it be great if your travel agency could access this vast inventory of travel options…?

You can. Expedia API lets travel agencies integrate Expedia’s data, pricing and booking capabilities directly into their travel website, app or booking platform. Travel agencies can offer a huge selection of options to their customer base, all in real time and on the same booking platform. Customers benefit from a seamless booking experience, with up-to-date pricing, availability and booking tools. All bookings and reservations can be managed on a single user-friendly platform, offering bags of convenience for both the travel business and its customers.

With the Expedia API, travel agencies can integrate seamlessly, offering their customers a vast array of travel options through their own search and booking platform.

How Does Expedia API Work?

Essentially, Expedia API allows travel businesses to integrate with Expedia’s database of travel suppliers through an Application Programming Interface (API). The software acts as a type of bridge, allowing travel agents to sync their booking software with Expedia. By connecting via the API, travel agents can offer Expedia’s travel data under their own brand.

In practice, it works behind the scenes through a series of well-defined endpoints. Developers can access Expedia’s database and integrate it into their front-end, providing accurate, real-time requests. This integration can benefit travelers by providing a streamlined booking process, enhancing their overall experience.

Two things make the travel market in India worth investigating: a thriving economy and high disposable incomes.

India’s travel market is widely considered to be one of the fastest-growing globally. Both domestic and outbound, the market is benefiting from an expanding middle-class population with high disposable income, coupled with a booming economy. Younger, affluent professionals are eager to explore destinations worldwide, which is excellent news for a travel agent in the know.

In this blog, we’ll explore the India travel market in-depth, focusing on key growth areas, government policies, and technology, as well as the future outlook for a travel business operating in the India market.

Key Travel Trends in Indian Tourism

The worldwide travel industry is continuing to grow, post-pandemic, and India is one of the countries driving this surge. In fact, the Indian travel market is poised to reshape global tourism, outpacing traditional drivers like the U.S., U.K., and Germany. But where exactly is this growth coming from?

  • Increasing Disposable Income – India’s economy has been consistently growing for many years, now making it the fourth largest in the world. This has produced a rise in working professionals with a high disposable income.
  • Digital Influence – the influence of social media brings hefty rewards in the travel industry, and India is no different. Travel content and influencer marketing are driving destination choices and experiential travel.
  • Improved Connectivity – global and domestic flight paths have increased significantly in India, through international partnerships and agreements. And major transit hubs like Delhi and Mumbai have become more efficient, allowing faster connections.
  • Government Policies – through initiatives like the e-Tourist Visa, the Indian government have made travel easier for international tourists. This has worked well alongside investment in infrastructure and marketing campaigns encouraging travelers to visit.

Experiential travel is the segment most benefiting from this favorable travel environment in India.

  1. Experiential Travel is top of the list when it comes to emerging travel markets in India, with Indian travelers keen to experience unique travel, focusing on thrill, nature and cultural discovery.
  2. Niche Travel
    1. Medical Tourism is experiencing a boost as Indians seek high-end treatments abroad.
    2. Educational Travel driven by higher numbers of overseas students.
    3. Religious Tourism, including travel to pilgrimage sites and spiritual locations.
  3. Solo Travel is becoming the new norm, especially among Millennials and Gen-Z, who are venturing alone to fulfil cultural or spiritual experiences.
  4. Sports Tourism is a fast-growing market in India, fueled by the popularity of experiential travel and the government’s new interest in hosting international sports events.

Domestic Travel

Indians are exploring more than ever within the boundaries of their own country. Domestic travel has always exceeded international travel, but demand is increasing even more. Young demographics are focused on discovering the diverse culture and geography of their own land. This is helped by travel becoming more affordable for a large proportion of the population. Many are increasing their spending on leisure trips, historical experiences, cultural discoveries, and more diverse trips. India is blessed with an incredible range of travel within its borders, from beaches to mountains to significant historical sites, and affluent Indians are eager to experience all of it.

Inbound Tourism

Although so far India isn’t a high-ranking destination for international visitors, it is undoubtedly one to watch. Each year, the country attracts more and more tourists looking to experience its diverse landscapes, rich culture and colorful cuisine. From the dramatic panorama of the Himalayas to the tea gardens of Darjeeling, visitors are realizing there is just too much to see on one visit. The government is making it easier for international tourists to enter the country, which is driving new and repeat bookings to this vast, diverse nation.

Travel Tech

Travel technology is massively fueling the travel landscape in India. India is a mobile-first market; most travel bookings are made on the go using mobile devices. Customers research, compare and even preview destinations online as they look for the ideal getaway. They demand seamless search and booking facilities, secure payments, personalized itineraries, competitive pricing, sustainable travel, and more…

To achieve all of this, businesses selling travel in India need to invest in cutting-edge travel technology to compete effectively.

  • Strong Website Design – reach your market, drive brand identity, links to social media.
  • Powerful Search and Booking Engine – user-friendly, access to complete travel inventory and GDS integration, real-time data.
  • API Technology – connect to the vast network of suppliers, including airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and ancillaries, all in real time.
  • Dynamic Tour Packaging – create, manage and sell diverse travel packages efficiently.
  • Payment and Administration Technology – manage payments, bookings and back-office demands.
  • AI-Driven Travel – deliver personalized travel itineraries for improved customer satisfaction.

India is projected to be among the top three global tourism markets by 2030.

Outlook

India’s tourism and hospitality sector is poised for substantial growth in the coming years. Domestic travel is pushing the surge, with domestic visitors expected to double by 2030, reaching an astonishing 5.2 billion! Better infrastructure and travel connectivity, coupled with high disposable income from a large middle-class population, are rapidly driving demand. In fact, at its current speed, demand is overtaking supply, particularly in the luxury travel sector, meaning strong growth is projected to continue well into the future. The Indian travel market is a high-growth, high-potential industry with significant opportunities for a travel business with a sustainable, digital approach to selling.

As a travel business, being part of the Indian travel market means you can be part of this quickly evolving, profitable industry.

Imagine your travel agency could connect with hundreds of hotels, wholesalers, and global distribution systems, offering real-time room availability to your customers through a single interface. With a hotel aggregator API that’s precisely what you can do.

Working effortlessly behind the scenes, a hotel aggregator API provides your customers with user-friendly, dynamic hotel availability data from the vast, global inventory of rooms.

What Are Hotel Aggregators?

Hotel aggregator API integration shown on a hotel booking platform

A hotel aggregator is a company or platform that collects real-time room availability data from multiple sources, including hotel chains, hotel consolidators and global distribution systems (GDS). Rather than negotiating rates and purchasing rooms, a hotel aggregator simply collects availability data and presents it in a standardized format. Searching numerous booking websites, an aggregator presents search results to compare different options easily. Once the searcher has chosen their preferred option, the aggregator redirects them to the actual booking website to finalize the reservation.

API Technology

Using API technology, a travel agent can connect to hotel aggregator data and present the results to its clients in a user-friendly platform. A hotel aggregator API allows travel agencies, OTAs, booking platforms and corporate travel systems to view dynamic availability data, search hotels, and retrieve and purchase rooms directly. A hotel aggregator API enables travel companies to access the vast hotel reservation network in real-time, present it to their customer base and streamline the booking process.

Using a hotel aggregator API means travel businesses gain access to a global supply of hotel availability data through a single interface.

Combining Hotel APIs with Flights, Cars and Tours

Aeroplane on laptop keyboard with cancel key, representing airline ticket changes and cancellations through consolidators

For an end-to-end travel solution, extending a hotel API to include flights, car rental, and other services means you can offer the full range of travel to your customers in a user-friendly format. Travelers rarely book hotels in isolation – they want the complete trip. By combining hotels APIs with flight, car rental and tour APIs travel platforms can become a unified booking solution. This creates an opportunity for extra revenue for the travel agent and increases the possibility of return bookings, as customers are more likely to revisit a site if they can book everything in one place.

Using Hotel Aggregator APIs in Travel Apps

Today’s travel market is dynamic, flexible and mostly booked on the go. Latest data suggests that 68% of online traffic for travel sites comes from mobile devices. To capture maximum bookings, your travel agency must offer the facility to make bookings using mobile apps. A hotel aggregator API enables travel apps to deliver real-time, global hotel reservation data with a single integration.

How Hotel Aggregator APIs Improve Customer Experience

Smiling tourist wearing hat and sunglasses benefitting from booking through a hotel aggregator api

The travel market is vast and dynamic. Prices are constantly moving to reflect supply and demand, and customers are prepared to search tirelessly to claim the best deal. So travel agents must be ahead of the game to secure their share of the market. Working with an aggregator ensures your travel agency is part of the huge travel network, and utilizing API technology means you can connect, search and book in a user-friendly format which can be integrated into your existing technology.

  • Dynamic Availability Data – when a room is booked through a one channel, the availability data is updated across all channels.
  • Price Comparison – hotel aggregator APIs display price data from multiple providers, allowing customers to compare and choose the most suitable offer.
  • Automated Booking – API software automates the booking process, minimizing manual work for businesses.
  • Integrated Payment Gateway – using an API with a built-in payment gateway means customers can make secure bookings and payments directly through the platform.
  • Reviews and Ratings – API software often includes the functionality to incorporate reviews and ratings, which can encourage customer trust in your travel agency.
  • Personalized Content – aggregator API technology allows high user preference filtering and AI powered personalization.

At Traveltek, our API integrations can be tailored to match your specific requirements. We can integrate the full range of travel services, including car rentals, flights, hotels, and ancillaries, into a single platform, providing a one-stop shop for your clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do hotel aggregator API bookings earn hotel loyalty points?

Typically, rooms booked through a hotel consolidator do not earn loyalty points.

Can a hotel aggregator API be combined with other APIs?

Yes, travel platforms can combine multiple travel APIs, including flights, car rental, hotels and tours, to deliver a one-stop shop for travelers.

How does API software help with inventory management?

API technology through a hotel aggregator offers real-time availability data, meaning when a room is booked through one channel, the status is automatically updated across all platforms.

Is a hotel aggregator the same as an online travel agent (OTA)?

A hotel aggregator is not exactly the same as an online travel agent, although some can function as both, collecting and displaying a wide variety of travel products and also directly facilitating booking. Traditionally, a hotel aggregator gathers availability data from multiple providers in one place to allow for comparisons.

Are hotel aggregators and consolidators the same thing?

No. Hotel consolidators buy rooms in bulk at discounted, wholesale prices and resell to travel agents and OTAs. A hotel aggregator provides access to a vast inventory of rooms from consolidators, GDS and hotel chains via API technology. A hotel aggregator is a layer of technology between the supply of rooms, and the travel seller.

]]>
GSA stands for General Sales Agent. The term refers to a third party or organization that represents a travel company. Think of them as the local face of your brand, your on-the-ground representative, promoting your company and travel services.

Most travel agencies operate out of a small number of offices, or for online travel agencies, from the web. This can create a barrier to entry into areas where you don’t have local representation, particularly if you’re venturing into the region as a new travel provider. A General Sales Agent (GSA) can fill the gap between a global travel agency and local customers, working to promote your travel services to your target market. They are your on-the-ground sales and marketing function, offering immediate access to the local customer base.

A GSA helps travel companies expand into new destinations through locally trusted representation. Read how Traveltek supports GSA and B2B operations here.

How General Sales Agents Work

Travel planning concept with guidebooks and cash for new destinations in USA, Europe, London, and India

The market for selling travel is worldwide – literally. As a travel provider, expanding into new routes and new locations can be challenging – you’ll be competing with established travel companies and with established relationships. So, if your strategic plan incorporates international expansion into new territories and markets, having a local company or representative promoting your services can be the key to success.

  • Representation – build brand awareness and market products. Extend brand consistency to the local market.
  • Sales and Reservations – handle customer relations, organize promotional events and develop targeted sales and marketing strategies.
  • Market Expertise – offer local insight into culture, market dynamics, and regulatory requirements.
  • Customer Service – handle enquiries, provide support and resolve queries face-to-face.
  • Networking and Building Relationships – manage relationships with local travel partners and negotiate contracts.
  • Cost-Efficient Expansion – gain immediate market presence without the high cost of creating a physical sales office.

Having a local representative on your side can be crucial when navigating a new region.

Who Can Be A GSA?

General Sales Agents can be individual freelancers, an agency or a company that represents businesses in a specific area. Their key qualities are local expertise, market knowledge and a high level of networking presence among business-to-business travel providers. They will be your trusted partner, with established links in a particular region.

Becoming a GSA requires proven travel experience, strong networks and knowledge of ticketing systems, distribution channels and market trends.

Are GSAs Still Relevant in Online Travel Agencies?

airplane routes on world map symbolizing international travel networks and global representation

General Sales Agents offer specialized travel knowledge and remain relevant despite online travel agents (OTAs). A good GSA is in touch with local businesses, having access to exclusive deals and discounts. They can offer invaluable support when booking complex, niche travel arrangements. An online travel agency is efficient for regular bookings, whereas GSAs offer tailored, face-to-face support for those more unique getaways, particularly multi-destination journeys or unfamiliar regions.

General sales agents offer valuable human contact for personalized, complex trips in unexplored locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a GSA differ from a travel agency?

A General Sales Agent is an authorized third-party representative of a travel provider who offers specialized knowledge and connections in a specific region or country. A travel agent offers a wide range of travel booking services globally.

How does a GSA generate revenue?

GSA revenue is typically earned through commission-based sales and performance-based incentives.

What is the role of a GSA in airlines?

A General Sales Agent in aviation represents an airline and is authorized to sell travel tickets, communicate with freight forwarders and shippers and assist customers with travel-related queries. The services of a GSA are often used when an airline plans to offer a route to a new destination. The GSA can market the route locally, raise awareness and build business-to-business relationships.

Are there disadvantages to working with a GSA?

The drawbacks of hiring a GSA include loss of control over marketing strategies and brand consistency issues. These can often be overcome with a detailed contractual agreement and by developing a close working relationship.

Back in the 1960’s, businesses and travelers demanded faster automation when it came to booking flights. At the time, each booking involved phone calls, paperwork, and manually recording details on ledgers or index cards. Once a booking was confirmed, a clerk would create a handwritten or typed paper ticket, which was posted to the customer. American Airlines and IBM revolutionized this process by creating SABRE, the world’s first centralized airline booking system.

Other airlines followed suit, eventually collaborating to develop major GDS platforms which expanded to include hotels, car rentals, cruises and other services. Today, the role of Global Distribution Systems is to act as a computerized business-to-business network, allowing travel providers real-time access to a huge travel inventory.

How APIs are Changing GDS Integrations for Travel Agencies

Online hotel booking with mobile payment confirmation representing travel API and GDS integration

It’s hard to believe, but for many years, airlines used a manual paper card system to book flights. This laborious, time-consuming task was replaced after computers became available in the 1960s and 70s. The Global Distribution System replaced manual, outdated methods by communicating live product, price and availability data to travel agents, tour operators and eventually, online booking engines. Thanks to GDS, travel agencies can offer their customers a streamlined booking process, with access to real-time, personalized content. But how does this happen in practice? With the majority of travel booked online and via mobile devices, how can travel agents connect their customers with this live stream of travel data?

A typical travel agent or online travel agent connects their own software to GDS data via an Application Programming Interface (API). This crucial piece of technology allows customers to view live data through a user-friendly, branded booking platform.

The API connection grants access to the travel agency to the vast inventory of travel services from numerous suppliers. Using the same GDS integration, agents can then make bookings and manage reservations directly through their software.

GDS and NDC: What’s The Difference?

Technology is crucial within the travel industry today. For a travel business to survive, customers must be matched with airlines, hotel businesses and other suppliers quickly and efficiently. The Global Distribution System (GDS) and New Distribution Capability (NDC) are two significant systems that have evolved to meet the demand for streamlined search and booking capabilities.

GDS came first, revolutionizing the industry with its huge database and centralized inventory. Through a single interface, GDS links travel agents with a large network of airlines, hotel rooms, car rentals and other ancillaries, enabling reservation management, payments and ticket issuing. GDS emerged in the 1970s and is deeply embedded in the travel industry. It provides access for a wide range of travel options in an organized, consistent way.

Developed by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA), the New Distribution Capability (NDC) is a further advancement for the travel industry. Using a standardized set of XML-based data transmission principles, it enables airlines to distribute and sell their products in a more personalized and efficient way. NDC enables richer content through dynamic pricing and the option to tailor baggage, seat selection and other ancillary services leading to a more customized travel experience.

How Your Travel Agency Can Benefit

As a travel agent, Global Distribution Systems are a vital tool to access a wide variety of travel content easily and efficiently. A GDS booking system provides travel agencies with a centralized platform to search and book travel services from multiple providers, streamlining the booking process. GDS delivers real-time data on inventory and availability, meaning travel agents always have current information to offer their customers. By connecting with the vast travel network, travel agents can create personalized itineraries with instant and reliable booking confirmations, which enhances customer experience and satisfaction.

How Do Travel Agents Access GDS?

Travel agents rely on Global Distribution Systems (GDS) to connect clients with flights, hotels, and experiences worldwide.

A travel agent accesses a Global Distribution System (GDS) through specialized software or web interfaces. Larger travel agencies may enter into a direct agreement with a GDS provider, but this is very costly and not generally required for smaller agencies. Smaller or online travel agents can use a third-party technology provider or a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that integrates GDS functionality. Because the third party oversees the technical aspect, this method of accessing GDS is often a much more cost-effective way to access GDS. Once the travel agent has access, they can integrate the data into their own booking technology.

At Traveltek, we offer API connections within our suite of cutting-edge travel technology. Our travel APIs facilitate access to our vast network of suppliers, including air travel, hotels, cruise lines, payment services, and ancillaries. We also provide support for SABRE, Travelport and Amadeus. Expand your reach with Traveltek.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the International Air Transport Association?

IATA is a trade association of around 300 airlines and around 80% of global air traffic. IATA is seen as the industry standard, defining best practices and policies to promote safe transport in aviation.

Can travel agencies use both GDS and NDC?

Yes, travel agencies can apply to use both systems. Using GDS and NDC means travel agents can leverage both systems to satisfy customers’ needs efficiently and effectively.

Is NDC required as part of IATA certification?

No, however it is recommended that an airline, IT provider, or distributor become NDC certified, as this provides assurance that they have the technical ability to send and receive NDC messages.

Will NDC replace the Global Distribution System?

NDC is evolving as a new standard and gaining in popularity within the industry, but it is unlikely to replace GDS in the foreseeable future. GDS is deeply integrated within the industry and it is more likely that the two will offer an integrated approach to benefit travelers and travel sellers.

What are the major GDS systems?

SABRE, Amadeus and Travelport are the primary GDS platforms used by travel agents and other online service providers.

Technology is moving fast, reshaping the way we live, work and connect with the rest of the world. What once seemed futuristic is now part of our daily lives. In the travel industry, tools like artificial intelligence, machine learning, GDS, and cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services are rapidly changing the way we book and experience travel.

For the travel agent or online booking agent, this can mean constantly reinvesting in new technology to stay ahead of the game. With an astonishing 72% of US adults preferring to book their trips online, a travel seller must offer a seamless booking experience to compete successfully. From personalized itineraries to real-time pricing, customers expect perfection, at the click of a button.

At Traveltek, we understand this challenge, which is why our solutions like iSell and iBos are built on AWS infrastructure to deliver the performance and reliability your customers demand.

AWS: Transforming Travel & Hospitality

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is driving the travel and hospitality industry with its cloud technology, data analytics and artificial intelligence. By utilizing AWS, companies are reshaping how they operate and engage with customers. Traveltek has been at the forefront of this transformation, leveraging AWS capabilities across our entire product suite to deliver enterprise-level solutions to travel businesses of all sizes.

  • Personalized Experiences – AWS uses AI and machine learning to offer personalized experiences, offers and upgrades based on preferences and historic bookings.
  • Operational Efficiency – cloud technology allows businesses to scale up or down without the need to reinvest in physical infrastructure. Airlines can optimize fleet management and hotels can maximize bookings, all using predictive analytics.
  • Real-Time Booking – IoT solutions, powered by AWS streamline baggage handling, hotel check ins, inventory management and flight notifications.
  • Customer Service – AWS supports AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants, providing customer service 24/7 for routine booking management like flight updates, hotel amendments and car rental queries.
  • Secure and Reliable – AWS automatically encrypts data at rest and in transit. It meets global security standards to support industries handling sensitive and is considered extremely secure.

Customer Service & Operational Efficiency

Professional call centre representative providing travel and hospitality customer service

With seamless booking and personalized experiences the norm, travel customers are adding impeccable customer service as a key differentiator when it comes to choosing a travel provider. Amazon Web Services has a big role in improving customer service in the travel industry.

With AWS analytics and machine learning, companies can use customer history to provide tailored recommendations. For after-sales service, AI-powered chatbots provide round-the-clock support, resolving common queries instantly. And with AWS, customer service is available in multiple languages, streamlining communication effortlessly.

Cloud Technology in Travel

Cloud technology has transformed the travel industry. Cloud platforms enable airlines, hotels and other travel companies to offer real-time booking, personalized customer experiences and flexible access to data anywhere. In terms of operational efficiency, cloud technology is a significant benefit, enabling travel providers to scale their operations up or down on demand without investing in physical IT infrastructure. They can easily adjust their computing power and storage by simply ‘renting’ more or less resources, on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis.

And the benefits don’t end there. Utilizing cloud technology allows centralized data management, harnessing valuable booking history and preferences in a single, cloud location. This facilitates data analytics and machine learning to create even more personalized travel experiences and targeted marketing.

With Traveltek’s cloud-based solutions running on AWS, your business gains all these advantages through our user-friendly interfaces – no cloud expertise required. Our iBos platform, for instance, centralizes your entire operation in the AWS cloud, providing powerful analytics and reporting tools that help you make data-driven decisions.

Can Small Travel Agencies Benefit from AWS?

Tour guides supported by cloud-based tools deliver smoother, smarter group travel experiences.

Driving major airlines, global hotel chains and booking platforms, Amazon Web Services provides crucial support on a large scale. But what about smaller travel agents and tour operators? It may come as a surprise to learn that AWS was designed with small and medium-sized businesses in mind. Things like pay-as-you-go pricing mean there’s no need for large-scale investment decisions; secure, high-performance infrastructure, AI, data analytics and customer support are all available to small businesses, allowing them to compete effectively with the big players in the industry.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the India cruise market for a while now, and one thing is certainly becoming clear: 2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for cruise tourism in India. The growth numbers, the new infrastructure, and the government backing all point in the same direction.

With India targeting 1 million passengers by 2029, a projected $323 million market by 2030, and a potential 800% growth over the next decade, the timing for travel agencies to enter the cruise sector couldn’t be better. Early movers can secure market share before competition intensifies and cruising becomes mainstream in India.

Whats Shaping This Growth and Why 2026 Is Crucial

  1. Significant investments in infrastructure.

In April 2025, India inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Ballard Pier, after an investment of ₹556 crore. The facility can handle five cruise ships simultaneously and aims for a throughput of 1 million passengers per year.

With the government’s Cruise Bharat Mission, plans are already underway to develop 10 ocean cruise terminals, 100 river cruise terminals, and 5 marinas by 2029.

Ports in Goa, Kochi, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam are being upgraded concurrently, and India is targeting a jump from ~125 ocean + river cruise calls today to 500 by 2025.

The result: the chronic infrastructure bottleneck that has held back cruise expansion is finally being addressed and the infrastructure will soon allow for India to be poised as a global hub for cruise.

  1. Policy tailwinds and regulatory easing
India’s five-year plan aims to grow ocean cruise passenger numbers from half a million to 1 million, while boosting cruise and river cruise calls.

Import duty exemptions and simplified tax regimes for foreign cruise operators have also been introduced, reducing one of the major friction points for international cruise lines operating in India.

These shifts make it materially easier now than ever for operators, tour agents and distribution partners to enter or scale in the segment.

  1. Global cruise growth remains robust
On the global front, CLIA forecasts 37.7 million ocean-going cruise passengers in 2025, driven largely by new-to-cruise travellers and growing loyalty.
Cruise lines continue to invest in sustainable innovations, fleet capacity, and diversified itineraries, all of which expand the addressable market.

The momentum is definitely there, and India is increasingly becoming part of their playbook.

  1. India’s trajectory is among the fastest in Asia
Recent reports suggest India has posted among the highest year-on-year growth in passenger volumes in Asia. (While precise CAGR estimates vary by source, most place India at or near the top).

India’s share of Asia’s source cruise market has gone from about 8-9% in 2019 to around 16% in 2023, according to CLIA, effectively a doubling in just a few years.

With penetration still extremely low compared to mature markets and the investment into infrastructure, the upside remains huge.

Why Now Is the Best Time for Indian Travel Businesses to Jump In

Low competition, high margins
The cruise distribution space in India is extremely under-penetrated. Many travel agents still do not offer cruise products or only do so via cumbersome, manual processes. Entering now means securing market share before the field gets crowded.

Where Indian Travel Businesses Can Win in Cruise

The good news is you don’t need to buy ships or build terminals to benefit from the India cruise boom. For most leisure travel businesses, the biggest opportunities are right here:

  • Cruise package sales:
Sell international itineraries across the world to meet the growing demand Indian travellers are already showing for cruising. Create tailor-made packages that bring dream holidays to life, whether for first-time cruisers or multi-generational families.
  • Shore excursions and local add-ons:
Cruise passengers want memorable experiences at every port. This is a great opportunity to offer flights, pre- or post-cruise accommodation, visas, cultural tours, food trails, and day trips, giving travellers a complete, seamless experience.
  • Niche and river cruising: River cruises like the MV Ganga Vilas prove that Indian travellers are ready for unique, luxury options. Smaller agencies can create bundles around these emerging products.

Technology removes the last obstacle
Getting into cruise isn’t just about selling cabins – it’s about having the right partner who knows the sector inside out. Cruise is complex: different lines, different booking systems, thousands of itineraries, changing rates. If you try to manage it all yourself, it’s overwhelming.

This is where Traveltek becomes a game changer. Our cruise API and booking products give you instant access to all the major cruise lines and tens of thousands of itineraries with no need for dozens of individual integrations. Agents and operators can quote, book, and dynamically package cruises in minutes, instead of wrangling spreadsheets, supplier portals, or manual calls.

Because our API is multi-currency, supports dynamic packaging (cruise + flights + hotels), and is cloud-native (PCI and security compliant), it gives you the tools to compete with global operators instantly.

The combination of technology and deep cruise expertise means you’re not just getting software, you’re getting a partner who knows how to make cruise work in India. There has literally never been an easier time for Indian travel businesses to launch or scale cruise operations and no more accessible path to connecting with top cruise lines than via Traveltek’s award-winning platform.

In the world of tourism, tour operators and travel agents have key roles in providing seamless travel experiences. Collectively, they answer the needs of prospective travelers by offering comprehensive holiday packages that range from accommodation and transportation to guided group tours. But how do these two professionals work together to ensure that travelers have stress-free adventures? Let’s look a little deeper at this partnership.

Understanding Tour Operators vs. Travel Agents

The important thing to understand about how tour operators work with travel agents is the difference between what each one does. A tour operator is responsible for planning and constructing travel packages including flights, accommodation, transport, and activities. On the other hand, a travel agent acts as an intermediary that assists clients in planning and booking their perfect holidays by offering pre-designed tour packages or custom travel options.

The fundamental difference is that tour operators create the travel products while the travel agents distribute them to buyers, collecting their commission on every sale.

How Tour Operators Work with Travel Agents

The relationship between tour operators and travel agents is well-oiled. How they work together to help the potential travelers:

Product and Tour Offerings: The tour operator puts together a group tour, holiday package, or special custom-made travel products. These will then be offered to the travel agents, who in turn work directly with the traveler.

Booking and Customer Service: Travel agents advise prospective travelers of the contents of each package so they can select appropriate options for themselves.

Commission Structure: The travel agent receives a commission for every booking made on behalf of the tour operator. This commission incentive motivates agents to sell the tour operator’s services.

Logistical Handling: While tour operators handle logistics, such as accommodation and transport arrangements, travel agents must attend to customer service and booking-related issues.

Benefits of Cooperation to the Travelers

The cooperation between tour operators and travel agents comes with several benefits for travelers:

  • Convenience: Travel agents allow potential travelers to plan and book their trips in one place, saving them time and effort.
  • Expertise: Travel agents have in-depth knowledge of tour operator offerings and can recommend the best packages based on individual preferences.
  • Value: Travel agents, through their relationships with tour operators, can offer competitive pricing and exclusive deals.

Key Elements of a Holiday Package

A tour operator’s holiday package generally includes the following:

Accommodation: Ranges from budget and mid-range to luxury hotels, resorts, and guesthouses.

Transport: Flights, transfers, and local transportation to make the journey smooth.

Activities and Excursions: Guided group tours, cultural experiences, and adventure activities tailored to the destination.

Group Tours: A Popular Option for Travelers

However, group tours are still desirable for many prospective travelers due to their ease and social aspect. Tour operators design such tours around specific themes or experiences, such as historical journeys, foodie tours, or nature explorations. Travel agents have also become instrumental in marketing these group tours by aiding travelers in finding packages that match their interests.

Traveling Industry: Let’s Navigate Together

The travel industry is ever-changing, with trends and consumer preferences changing daily. The travel agent and tour operator can adapt to these changes by working together and continuing to offer valuable services. They work together to anticipate the needs of modern travelers, provide flexible booking options, and react to global events that affect travel.

Create Unforgettable Journeys with Traveltek

A tour operator’s relationship with a travel agent is considered the basis for providing the customer with a seamless and remembered travel experience. While they remain the driving force to package specialist travel packages, travel agents offer personalized consultation for inquiries about packages and bookings. This means that they will get the best accommodation facilities and transport to enjoy wonderful tours.

Traveltek empowers tour operators and travel agents with an award-winning travel business that, coupled with increased efficiencies, helps them accomplish more from the business. The travel industry is bursting with opportunities for new and established entrepreneurs. The growth of online travel services has reshaped how people book vacations, tours, flights, cruises and more. For those looking to start an online travel business, there has never been a better time to dive in.

Why Start an Online Travel Agency?

With a growing number of travelers booking online, the demand for digital travel services is high. Online travel agencies (OTAs), home-based travel businesses, and tour operators are all benefiting from increased demand. Starting an online travel agency, whether to book flights or cruises, opens doors to a global audience without the traditional overhead costs.

Winning Marketing Strategy

Marketing is essential in a competitive industry like travel. Developing a marketing strategy tailored to an online travel agency involves optimizing your travel agency website with SEO to attract organic traffic as well as making your site as user friendly as possible. And don’t forget mobile responsive, more and more people are now booking from a mobile device rather than a desktop, so you need to make sure your site is easy to use on a smaller screen too.

High-performance travel websites benefit from targeted social media engagement, showcasing real life experiences, and using email marketing to engage potential customers. A strong social media presence lets travelers visualize their next trip, from city tours to cruise lines, enhancing your reach.

Choosing the Right Website Developers

Your website is the cornerstone of your travel business. Working with specialized travel website developers ensures a smooth, high-performance user experience that is visually appealing and functional. Integrating features like real-time booking, secure payment options, and personalized recommendations will set your travel agency website apart. With the right web development team, you can build a scalable online marketplace that grows with your business. The perfect solution to this is a white label solution, which provides you with all the necessary output for your site, but branded to your own business.

Expanding Travel Services for Maximum Reach

Modern travelers usually look for travel services from one source, including flights, accommodations, car rentals, and experiences. By expanding your offerings, you can attract a broader customer base and increase revenue potential. This can be done easily with the use of APIs and good travel management software. As an online travel agent, consider forming partnerships with airlines, cruise lines, and local tour operators to create a seamless experience for your customers.

Targeting Niche Markets

Consider focusing on niche markets to stand out. For instance, catering to cruise travelers, wellness tourism, or eco-friendly experiences can help you carve out a unique space in the travel industry. By tailoring your website to a specific audience and designing marketing campaigns for their needs, you can build a loyal customer base.

Online Marketplace for Growth

Positioning your business as an online marketplace for travel can significantly expand your reach. Through affiliations and partnerships, you can offer a range of services, from guided tours to local experiences. This model allows you to cater to a wider array of travel needs and create a memorable travel experience for your customers.

Tips for Home-Based Travel Entrepreneurs

Starting a home-based travel business is a low-overhead way to enter the industry. You can operate as a full-service travel agent, helping clients with everything. With a solid marketing strategy, partnerships, and the right travel technology products, you can create a reputable business that allows for flexibility while delivering high-quality service.

The online travel business is rich with opportunities. Whether you aim to start a travel agency or operate as an online travel agent from home, focusing on high-quality customer experiences, strategic marketing, and specialized services can propel your business to success.
